PRESS RELEASE

SAVANNAH, GA — (August 25, 2025) — Pond & Company (“Pond”), an industry leader in engineering, architecture, planning, environmental, and construction management services, has been selected by the City of Savannah as part of the EMC/Thomas & Hutton team to lead the design services for the Springfield Canal Drainage Improvements project, which will help address drainage issues in two historic West Savannah neighborhoods near the Springfield Canal.

The project includes widening and excavating portions of the Springfield Canal to improve stormwater conveyance throughout the Carver Village and Cloverdale neighborhoods, areas traditionally impacted by flooding and insufficient drainage infrastructure for more than 10 years. As part of this effort, Pond will assist in delivering comprehensive stormwater infrastructure designs that target a minimum 25-year, 24-hour rainfall event, with long-term improvements aiming to withstand 100-year, 24-hour storm events.

“This contract is a crucial step toward correcting decades of systemic drainage challenges in historically underserved neighborhoods,” said Pond’s Executive Vice President of Infrastructure, James McNabb. “We are honored to partner with the City of Savannah on a project that not only advances flood resilience and public safety but also supports equitable development and long-term environmental sustainability for generations to come.”

Pond’s project scope includes completing a FEMA National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Environmental Assessment, assisting with environmental permitting services, and coordinating with the Georgia DOT bridge office.

These improvements aim to support the City’s broader Canal District revitalization efforts, which focus on economic development, public green spaces, and increased resilience against extreme weather events.
