Buford Highway Streetscapes - Gwinnett County, GA
Pond provided design services to improve this high-profile corridor along State Route (SR) 13/US-23, Buford Highway. This project stretched two miles from Global Forum Boulevard, near the DeKalb County line to Jimmy Carter Boulevard and included intersection improvements at Amwiler Road, Pleasantdale Road, Jones Mill Road/Button Gwinnett Drive, and Oak Road. Pond worked with Norfolk Southern Railroad to close a railroad crossing at Lanasol Drive, and get a long-term lease for use of several acres of railroad property. Significant parts of the state route, including the signals, are within Norfolk Southern R/W and required coordination and permitting prior to construction. With an ADT over 25,000 along the corridor, abundant pedestrian use, and adjacent signalized railroad crossings, the four signals along the corridor were important to the pedestrian safety and traffic flow. New signals were provided on strain wire, with pedestrian countdown timers. Signals included a mix of IVDS cameras and presence loops.
