Lang Carson Park Master Plan - Atlanta, GA
Lang Carson Park is in the historic Reynoldstown community of Atlanta. The advent of I-20 in the 1960s severely impacted the neighborhoods of Grant Park, East Atlanta, and Reynoldstown; only now are these neighborhoods truly seeing signs of significant revitalization in spite of the divide that was created some 50 years ago, also at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Each of these historical moments have left a mark on the community. The park is the site of a former school in the middle of the community, and by and large the park is hidden from sight behind the school and is interior to a large residential block that completely surrounds it. The former school has been converted into a community center providing community-building, education, housing, and economic opportunities to residents of Reynoldstown and beyond.
The Landscape Architecture team at Pond developed a master plan for the park, which greatly increase the parks footprint and prominence on the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail. The master plan process worked with the community to identify unique activities that occur in the park, such as the Atlanta Bike Polo league that utilizes the covered basketball court for their matches, and the annual Reynoldstown Wheelbarrow Festival. Our team has continued work with the Friends of Lang Carson Park to develop construction documents for a portion of the master plan, remaking the Manigault Street park entrance, with a new barrier free entry and integrated play space.
