Gary/Chicago Airport (GYY) Air Cargo Development Services
Pond is serving as the trusted advisor to Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) as the airport pursues a transformative expansion of its air cargo capabilities. With increasing regional demand and renewed interest from logistics partners, GYY began a comprehensive air cargo development initiative in 2023 to address long-standing infrastructure limitations and capitalize on growth opportunities. Pond’s ongoing support spans planning, technical review, stakeholder engagement, and facility programming—positioning the airport to move from vision to implementation with a coordinated, data-driven approach.
At the heart of Pond’s engagement is an Air Cargo Ramp Study—a foundational effort to evaluate the airport’s airside capacity, identify development constraints, and chart a phased roadmap for growth. The study began with a series of field investigations and site assessments to understand existing airfield conditions and development readiness. Pond conducted one-on-one stakeholder interviews with airport leadership, operations staff, and potential tenants. Completed in 120 days, these insights helped shape a planning process that is responsive to the real-world operational and economic context of the airport.
Since completing the Air Cargo Ramp Study, Pond continues to work with GYY to capture emerging cargo opportunities. This includes reviewing the design of Phase I of the cargo apron for integration into the larger development. Pond is also coordinating with an air cargo anchor tenant to define requirements for a new facility that will also accommodate other integrated logistics providers. By maintaining close relationships with tenants during early-stage development, the airport is better positioned to respond quickly to market interest and attract long-term investment.
More than a study, this engagement has delivered a clear, actionable framework to support near-term construction and long-term economic growth. As GYY positions itself as a key logistics hub in the Midwest, Pond continues to provide the insight, agility, and trusted partnership needed to transform potential into progress.
