Repair Waterfront Facilities, Naval Submarine Base
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is situated off the Intracoastal Waterway between the city of St. Mary's and Cumberland Island in Georgia. SUBASE Kings Bay is the homeport to the Atlantic Fleet’s Trident II Submarines.
Kings Bay provides all required infrastructure to support Trident-class submarines, including industrial and logistics support for the incremental overhaul, modernization, and repair of the submarines at the Trident Refit Facility including Refit Wharf #1 and Refit Wharf #2. The Strategic Weapons Facility, Atlantic provides strategic missiles and strategic weapons system support to the ballistic missile fleet. The SWFLANT facilities include the Explosive Handling Wharf 1, Warping Wharf, and Explosive Handling Wharf 2.
The design of repairs included repairs to the concrete structures as well as corrosion prevention measures for both the submerged steel sections and the reinforced concrete structures. Innovative design techniques were required to ensure that adequate protection could be achieved on both structures without interference and coating damage.
Pond conducted extensive testing in support of corrosion control measures including DC cathodic protection, conducting soil corrosivity analysis, and designing a corrosion control system for underground pipeline, caisson, data analysis, and reports.
