Dunwoody Nature Center Campus Improvements
Since 2021, Pond has partnered with the Dunwoody Nature Center (DNC) on a series of campus improvement projects. This series of projects stemmed from a Site Master Plan Update that Pond completed to assist the DNC in executing a capital campaign. The master plan update included site analysis, documenting improvements to date, coordinating with DNC and city staff, and developing conceptual plans for stormwater management, improvements to their eco-classroom area, and a new learning lab. DNC adopted the final plan and hired Pond to continue with detailed design and construction documentation/permitting for the eco-classroom area improvements and the Wildcat Learning Lab. The improvements to the eco-classroom area include significant underground stormwater infrastructure (design led by Dewberry) and a series of bioretention/rain gardens that feed into an existing bioretention area. In conjunction with these stormwater infrastructure improvements, Pond designed an accessible hexagonal deck overlooking the rain garden, which provides additional outdoor classroom space and educational opportunities. The hexagonal shape was inspired by a honeybee hive in the eco-classroom area. Pond is currently finalizing the design for the new Wildcat Learning Lab building, which will replace an older, non-compliant classroom structure. The new Learning Lab will be LEED-certified, fully accessible, and designed to accommodate numerous uses, including summer camps, educational classes, and private events. Pond has also designed an outdoor pavilion that connects to the existing restroom building adjacent to the Learning Lab, tying everything together aesthetically. Concurrent with the DNC work, Pond is contracted with the City of Dunwoody to install the required stormwater infrastructure for the new learning lab and improve the surrounding hardscape.
