ATLANTA – The Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. Boulevard at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport project received the 2013 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Georgia Grand Award for Engineering Excellence and the People’s Choice Award. The awards were announced on Saturday, February 16 at the 2013 Georgia Engineers Week Gala.

Pond & Company, as part of The AIS Joint Venture, collaborated with The Ascend Joint Venture to overcome the design challenges of creating a new entrance to the world’s busiest airport.

“It’s truly remarkable to see such a momentous coordination effort come to fruition,” said Jim Turner, PE, Aviation Engineer at Pond & Company. “This project involved so many different entities on a local, state and national level working as one to change Atlanta. Not only did we need to coordinate between all of these entities, but also between other concurrent projects while maintaining access to the airport for employees and patrons at all times.”

The new International Terminal with separate access from Interstate-75 was needed in order to expedite service to the growing number of international travelers who utilize the airport. The project reconfigured two parallel service roadways into one interconnected network that utilized a three tiered elevated roadway system to provide easier access for travelers.

The team employed several innovative “first in Georgia” design and construction techniques to overcome limitations and constraints presented by the build location.     The roadway configuration was completed on time, in advance of the terminal’s completion.
