Pond Ingenuity Winter 2020 13 Pond Ingenuity inter 2020 13 and control booths, the team designed a new gate house, canopy for POV traffic, ballistic rated guard kiosks, and truck inspection facility. Each of these aspects were carefully configured according to LEED Silver, UFC 4-022-01, and Pamphlet 55-15 “Traffic Engineering for Better Entry Control” to fulfill capacity, security and sustainability guidelines. With efficiency at the forefront of this project, the designers proposed a plan that would offer minimal disruptions to traffic flow. After assessing the current conditions of the entry control facility, Pond worked closely with the Ohio Department of Transportation to provide an adjacent intersection. This installation would guide incoming traffic and permit a more intuitive entry process. This allowed for base security to implement a system that would screen the field-of-view from approaching vehicles to the gatehouse. These measures supplied preliminary methods for the screening of vehicles to decrease delays and wait time. The updated layout also provided separate traffic lanes with electronic signage to separate the POV traffic and commercial truck traffic. The commercial trucks requiring inspection were directed toward staging lanes created to prevent backup with a waiting area for drivers while their trucks were inspected. Inspection pits with LED lights were installed for the truck inspection bays to allow security staff to visually check the trucks from below. The gate house included an open office space for security staff, two private restrooms, Military Working Dogs room, trucker waiting lounge, trucker interview room, two storage rooms, the two open bays for truck inspections, and associated utility spaces. In addition to easing traffic constraints, the facility’s capacity to reinforce security measures was a crucial factor in its de s i gn. The base f enc i ng was reconfigured to strengthen perimeter protection. Passive force protection measures included final denial barriers, traffic lights, exterior lighting, emergency generators and a security camera system. These barriers are a strategic asset for base security forces in their daily duty to prevent insurgents from gaining access. Pond was proud to play an active role in optimizing entry processes and elevating safety operations for one of our nation’s leaders in military aviation development. With the on-time and on-budget completion of this entry gate, Wright Patterson Air Force Base is equipped to support a high volume of visitors and guests. The security forces now have one of the first facilities to adhere to new UFC regulations and allow them to properly inspect commercial trucks and process Privately Operated Vehicles.  Eric Adami, PE Senior Project Manager
