Ingenuity Summer 2019

18 Pond | www.pondco.com Showcase A Look at Pond's Ingenuity in Action Campus Safety Facility, Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, Georgia Pond’s design of Georgia Institute of Technology’s (GT) state-of-the-art law enforcement headquarters allows for more effective public safety, furthering GA Tech’s mission to maintain a secure downtown campus for students and staff. The team accomplished this through the creation of intentional spaces, unit consolidation, and the strategic placement of the facility at the northwest edge of the urban campus. Notable features of the 30,000 SF facility include a Communication Center with duress stations and 1,700 security cameras, a multi-purpose Emergency Operations Center and a Call Taking-911 center. Five obsolete campus buildings were unified to configure this $10.5M space. The site design considers the future Atlanta Streetcar Corridor on 10th Street as well as protected parking for police and visitors. Special vehicles such as patrol bikes, motorcycles and Segways can be stored in a secured underground parking area. The facility incorporates and nurtures the educational environment it exists within. Multiple student programs are integrated into its operation. Student video technicians have the unique opportunity to work alongside trained dispatchers. The space also allows for sponsoring student research related to public safety and law enforcement. The project was designed in compliance of Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) standards as well as building system efficiency guidelines of ASHRAE 90.1, 189.1 and Georgia Peach/ Energy Code. To provide a healthy environment for the staff, the building was designed to achieve WELL certification. WELL is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring features of the built environment that impact human health and well-being through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. The formation of a single-unit facility enhances internal communications, enables effective collaboration with the student body, and permits efficient campus surveillance.
