HISTORIC EVERGREEN CEMETERY MASTER PLAN, RICHMOND, VA | EnRichmond Foundation’s purchase and investment in Historic Evergreen Cemetery represents a turning point for preservation and open space conservation in the City of Richmond. It also represents a new approach to community engagement. The non-profit parks organization is collaboratively working with stakeholders to empower the community to promote and maintain the 67-acre, UNESCO world heritage site, affiliated with the American Slave Trail. Following the purchase of the cemetery in 2017, EnRichmond coordinated with Project Manager, Andrew Kohr to begin a community engagement process. Taking place in November of that year, the workshop served as a beginning point for a master planning process. Over the next year, EnRichmond and its staff created an advisory group of stakeholders (ExPRT) to guide a vision for the preservation of the cemetery. They also educate residents through a variety of public venues about Evergreen and its need for preservation. In January 2019, EnRichmond hired Pond to complete the master plan effort. The final plan included extensive stakeholder engagement and education, and the final document was organized by topics so that a broader audience would find the document useful. In total, there were 34 strategies within 10 different topic areas ranging from restoration to safety and wayfinding. The final plan was completed in October 2019. ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY, ROOSEVELT FOUNTAIN, ARLINGTON, VA | Pond completed a study and design for two fountains at the Arlington National Cemetery. Roosevelt fountain was originally constructed in 1930. Before the Pond’s repair project, water leaked so badly out of the historic fountain that water level could be seen visually dropping in the basin. After the water level dropped to the low limit the pump would shut off, and the fountain was not able to operate for several years. The project scope included design bid-build package consisting of construction plans and specifications. HENRY KOEN FEDERAL BUILDING REHABILITATION, RUSSELLVILLE, AR | Pond prepared the landscape architecture, civil site design, and electrical design for the historic Henry Koen Federal Building. This project encompassed a major renovation of the electrical and telecom systems in the building, Pond also provided civil site design and landscape architecture services, including parking additions, re-striping the existing surface lot to maximize parking, and preserving the existing trees. All invasive plant species were removed and replaced with adaptive, non- invasive, drought tolerant plantings. Finally, a design was prepared to rehabilitate the off-site Supervisor’s Office Warehouse parking. J. BRATTON DAVIS U.S. BANKRUPTCY COURTHOUSE CSO STATION, COLUMBIA, SC | Project goals were to modify the entrance security screening station to provide CSOs with improved sight lines and protection while providing visitors with a clear travel path following screening. The design needed to honor the historic nature of the building while accommodating the all screening equipment. Because the screening station had to remain operational at all times, phasing was a critical aspect of project design.
