Widening of St. Mary’s Road - Columbus, GA

Pond provided full design and management for this GDOT widening project which included over one mile of major urban roadway reconstruction in an Urban Historical District of Columbus, GA.

The proposed widening and reconstruction of St. Mary’s Road from Buena Vista Road to Robin Road included widening to a four-lane road, two lanes in each direction and with a two-way left turn lane. Provisions for a possible 20 foot raised median were included in the design should future traffic conditions warrant. Curbs, gutters and sidewalks were provided on both sides of the roadway throughout the project limits. Also included was the widening of the Brennan Road approach to the St. Mary’s/Buena Vista Road intersection. Brennan Road was widened from two lanes to four lanes including a turn lane at the St. Mary’s/Buena Vista Road intersection.

In addition to the extensive environmental clearances, intensive utility coordination included an adjacent transmission line and design of a parallel enclosed drainage system raised into a divided multi-lane highway with a median.

Key elements of this project included:

  • Length – over one mile of urban roadway including 8 intersections.
  • 249 Drawings.
  • Traffic 14,500 ADT.
  • Roadway design developed within context of multiple environmentally sensitive properties.
