The scope of work for this Charleston District project for the 81st USAR included the preparation of a full design by Pond as Designer of Record on this D/B project with Pentacon Construction, including design drawings and technical specifications for the new 94,925 sf ($16M) Training Aids Support Center at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
The project included administration areas, office areas, conference room (with A/V equipment), training areas, restrooms, break areas, communication areas, secure operations storage areas, shop areas, and warehouse areas. Supporting facilities include utilities; electric service, fire protection and alarm systems; parking, walks, curbs and gutters; storm drainage, information systems; and site improvements. The project achieved LEED Silver certification (version 3.0). Pond performed LEED Administrator duties and coordinated the approval of 38 design credits with USGBC.
Anti-terrorism/force protection (AT/FP) measures include, siting distances, landscaping for obstruction protection, and appropriate fencing. The building required blast design for windows and structure. Structural design included accommodating large spans as well as provided slab design for forklift traffic in the warehouse area. Special considerations for seismic design were also necessary. Helical piers were also part of the foundation support design. Warehouse area also included bridge cranes. This project was won as a competitive design-build effort. The Pond team was selected based on their understanding of facility function, demonstrated in their efficient and appealing design.
Pond was also heavily involved in construction phase services to include shop drawing reviews, RFIs, Construction Observation and LEED support for construction.
