Tanyard Creek Trail - Atlanta, GA

The Tanyard Creek Trail, connecting Bobby Jones Golf Course to the Tanyard Creek Park and the surrounding neighborhoods, is the first mile of Atlanta BeltLine Trail in the northern portion of the city. The trail links multiple green spaces and park lands that were previously divided from one another by roadways and streams.

This single mile of trail contains three bridges, two greater than 100 feet in length, and one roadway underpass beneath the very busy Collier road. Now neighbors can easily move about their community with safe road and stream crossings, and as the Atlanta Beltline continues to grow, this segment of trail will allow users to reach neighboring parts of town with great ease and safety. This trail was developed over a number of years with significant amounts of input from neighboring residents.

It was not without difficulties such as the need for stream buffer variances and the need to protect as many large mature trees as possible. The Pond team successfully facilitated acquiring a stream buffer variance from the Georgia EPD, and worked with the City of Atlanta Arborists to incorporate a tree root protection system dubbed “root bridging” in an effort to reduce construction impacts to adjacent trees.
