Silver Comet Trail – Rockmart to Cedartown - Polk County, GA
Named for the passenger train that used this route from 1947 to 1968, The Silver Comet Trail System runs from Smyrna, Georgia, 61.5 miles west to the Alabama border. The Rockmart to Cedartown section of the trail connects these two small towns across scenic, rolling land.
While much of the Silver Comet Trail uses defunct rail lines, this segment required re-routing because trains are still active in this area. In order to divert the trail, Pond coordinated with the client, utility companies and land owners. Pond provided graphics to illustrate where easements and land acquisitions were required. In Cedartown, existing sidewalks were upgraded and new pedestrian crosswalks were installed at trail crossings to promote walking and biking as alternatives to automobile use. The pastoral scenery of this section of The Silver Comet trail is one of the features that attracts bicyclists, walkers, and rollerbladers.
