Remote Unit Design for Airport Security Detection Equipment - Hollywood Int'l Airport, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Pond provided full service design for three Airport Surveillance Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) sites at Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport. In support of the Airports project to add a new parallel runway, these three sites needed to be installed / relocated in order to support safe operation at the airport. One of the sites was a relocation while the other two were new sites. Scope of services for each site included ground topographical surveys, geotechnical exploration and existing utility service investigations as well as airport coordination and development of civil/site, structural and electrical documents to reflect the installations. Pond coordinated with the Airport’s Program Management Team as airport expansion work at two of the sites was not yet completed, however, would be completed by the time the construction of this project was to start. This coordination resulted in the development of an interim set of drawing sheets to depict the proposed work to be done under the airports program.

The projects each averaged $200,000 of construction. The site located on the top level of the Cypress Parking Deck was challenging based on the type of existing construction (post tensioned concrete). The design team developed a solution that would provide a high degree of flexibility in mounting of an antenna frame in order to avoid the reinforcing strands.
