Parade Deck Solar Shade - Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC

Pond provided architectural and engineering design services for an 8,000 square foot sun shade canopy for the Parade Field visitor viewing stands. The shade canopy is a curved, rolled cantilevered steel trussed frame structure with a standing seam metal roof. The canopy was designed to provide shade for both existing and future expanded seating, a total of 5,000 bleacher seats. The project features an aesthetically unique canopy system in contrast to the existing VIP stands cover. Tubular steel column spacing was coordinated with existing comfort station buildings and bleachers walk aisles.

Pond also designed a mono-crystalline photovoltaic (PV) panel array clipped to the canopy roof system to supply 100kW power to be used by the Parade Deck, with excess power cycled to the base electrical grid. The PV system included a performance monitoring display station showing such factors as power generation, PV cell temperature, and weather data.

Pond delivered architectural, structural, electrical, and civil services for a fast-paced four-month design schedule.
