Motor Transportation Facility - Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC

The $7.2M Motor Transport Facility at MCRD Parris Island will be for the maintenance of marine vehicles stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina. The transport facility will be approximately 10,500 sf with an additional 4,100 sf shed, a 3,900 sf repair platform and a 1,500 sf grease rack. The vehicle maintenance facility will be a one-story steel frame structure on pile foundations with CMU infill and brick veneer. The demolition of buildings 156A, 157 and 176 are also included within this project.

This 4.5± acre multi-building facility was performed with JV partner TranSystems and also included extensive environmental permitting. The project was constructed within the 100 year flood plain within the storm surge impact zone, and also involved coordinating design elements in an area of contaminated soils. Pond worked closely with the client, end-user, NAVFAC Environmental and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control to permit and develop the project. Special construction techniques involving coordination of fill placement to minimize excavation in areas of concern were coordinated during design.

The project involved extensive hardstand and fencing, heavy vehicle maintenance and repair, hazardous and waste oil storage, industrial exhaust systems, multi-building complexes, extensive utility design as well as office and meeting facilities. Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection components were designed and coordinated for compliance with regard to the adjacent public works facilities. The project was designed to LEED® Silver standards and also included the use of geothermal heating in the main facility.
