Hurricane Preparedness & Response Plans

Pond developed specific Hurricane Preparedness and Response Plans for two fuel storage facilities. The industry has become more aware of the potential for damage due to hurricanes and typhoons since Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita. The need for a detailed plan of action for a fuel farm is critical to prevent the release of fuel into the environment and to protect the assets in the tank farm.

Pond’s Hurricane Plan development included a detailed engineering analysis of the tanks at each facility to determine the ability to withstand hurricane force winds, storm surge and rains. The plans considered the amount of fuel needed in the tanks at each hurricane category to stabilize the tanks to minimize damage. The evaluation also included small tanks, piping and other structures within the facility.

The delivered plans included detailed checklists for each Port Condition change and recommended inventory levels for the tanks at the various hurricane conditions. The intent was to provide the facility operator information to secure his facility without relying on outside support. The checklists even included a post event inspection plan to get the facility back into operation after the storm.
