Facility Lighting Modifications - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA)

For more than six years, Pond has been providing lighting modification services at many of MARTA’s rail stations. The contract involves the study and design of lighting modifications to incorporate energy-saving technologies, reduce operating and maintenance costs and provide safety improvements to best serve MARTA’s customers. The contract specifically includes the design services such as assessment of existing lighting conditions and equipment, lighting analysis and design, preparation of bid documents for the construction of the modifications, technical support during the construction of the modifications and other engineering consultation services.

Phase I, Station Lighting Evaluation Study

This first task of the contract involved the evaluation of the lighting systems for ten rail stations including station patron areas such as entrances, plazas, concourses, platforms and parking lots. The study consisted of investigating each site, analyzing the existing conditions, reporting the results with recommendations, providing cost estimates for project budgeting and developing project schedules for these ten stations.

Phase I, Station Lighting Upgrades

After the study, Pond began the design drawings for the lighting upgrades proposed at these stations. More site investigation was required, and drawing backgrounds were prepared and confirmed. Lighting calculations were performed and delivered to MARTA for review. The drawing packages usually grouped three stations into one bid package. The following is a list of the bid packages for the stations involved:

  • Decatur, Hamilton E. Holmes, and Arts Center
  • Inman Park – Reynoldstown, King Memorial, and Vine City
  • West End, Georgia State, and Edgewood-Candler Park
  • Candler Park Police Facility and North Lot of Edgewood-Candler Park Station
  • Edgewood-Candler Park Station Platform Ceiling Repair

Phase II, Station Lighting Evaluation Study

This study involved the review of twelve additional rail stations. The same design services were provided as included in the previous study. However, the lessons learned from the previous projects were applied in this study. In addition, input from MARTA police services, station managers and EP&E was obtained and incorporated into the study.

Phase II, Station Lighting Upgrades

Upgrade designs were provided for Garnett, Avondale, West Lake and Oakland City; East Point, North Avenue, Civic Center and Dome/GWCC/CNN; and Five Points Plaza.
