Fuel Cell Maintenance & Corrosion Control Facilities - Pope Field, NC

Pond provided complete architectural and engineering design of a 58,000 square foot hangar for providing complete encapsulation during general and fuel cell maintenance for the C-130J Aircraft. This state-of-the-art hangar consisted of:

  • Wet Pipe High Expansion Foam Fire Suppression Systems
  • Two, Clear Span Hangar Bays
  • Upward Acting Fabric Hangar Doors
  • Administrative Areas & Attendant Shops
  • Overhead Bridge Crane
  • Explosion-Proof Electrical Systems
  • Process Ventilation System
  • Mechanical, Electrical & Communications Rooms
  • Locker Rooms & Rest Rooms
  • Fuel Cell Test Room
  • Fall Protection System
  • Silver SPiRiT* Rating
  • CCTV & CATV
  • Compressed & Breathing Air Systems
  • Public Address/Intercom System
  • Lightning Protection System

Due to the tight constraints of the site, meeting all required Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) setbacks was a challenge. Setback distances were addressed by making the side access roads part of the flightline secure areas, and setting the facility as close to the flightline as possible. The secure fence was strategically set to define the flightline access points and technically meet the required AT/FP setbacks.

Under the same IDIQ contract, Pond also developed a D/B RFP for a $14.7M (70,000 sf) two-bay corrosion control hangar, used for stripping and painting C-130J and A-10 aircraft, immediately adjacent to the C-130J Two Bay Hangar. Pond provided topographic, geotechnical and asbestos surveys. The project also involved demolition and removal of existing buildings and underground fuel oil storage tanks.

The RFP also included the addition of privately owned vehicle (POV) satellite parking off-site. Pond accomplished a site survey and prepared drawings and specifications. Additionally, Pond prepared drawings for an A-10 aircraft run-up tiedown pad. Pond participated in the Source Selection evaluation as a Proposal Technical Evaluator as well as provided engineering services during construction, answering RFIs and evaluating material submittals.
