Aircraft Maintenance Hangar - Barnes Air National Guard Base, Westfield, MA

Pond provided full design and construction administration services including interior design for the renovations and repair to approximately 28,000sf of an existing aircraft maintenance hangar, and a 6,000sf addition of administrative and support areas.

The hangar received new upward acting fabric doors, new area lighting, and service troughs were provided in the floor for the extension of temporary power, communications, and air conditioning to the aircraft for routine service/maintenance, and upgrades.  A new high expansion foam (HEF) pump system was designed, consisting of a new pump room and above ground water storage tanks. The remaining portion of the facility was provided with a traditional fire suppression system.  Remedial repairs were performed on the hangar floor, and a new protective specialty coating was applied.

A new administrative wing was constructed to the north side of the facility to house the Commander, Deputy Commander, Unit Commanders, Chiefs, First Sergeants, and Orderly area.  A new Structural Shop, with a Training Classroom addition is also located to the north of the existing facility.

The existing restrooms and locker rooms were completely renovated, and the HVAC and electrical systems were completely gutted. The remaining areas were renovated to provide for a Ready Room, Offices and support spaces for A, B, C Flights, a MOC, a large Training Classroom, an Electro/Environmental Shop, an Egress Shop, and a Hydraulic Shop. The project also includes upgrades to architectural, electrical, mechanical and structural components of the building.  The project will pursue LEED Silver certification.
