Air Support Operations Squadron - International Airport, Savannah, GA
The Georgia Air National Guard required a properly sized and configured facility to support the 165th Air Support Operations Squadron. This squadron relocated from Glynco Air Guard Station in Brunswick, Georgia, to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Savannah in support of day-to-day operations and hands-on training. Functional areas included but were not limited to: administrative space and offices for the command, administration, and operations sections, vault for classified storage, areas for training, planning, briefing, conference rooms, tech order library, maintenance shops, various types of storage rooms and warehouse space, vehicle & equipment maintenance bays, military vehicle storage, covered storage shed, battery shop, showers/locker rooms/restrooms, janitor, break room, communications and mechanical room.
The facility consists of reinforced concrete foundation and floor slab, structural steel frame with masonry walls and standing seam roof. Interior walls with metal studs and gypsum board and mechanical, electrical, and fire protection system. Vehicle & maintenance bays to include roll up doors, infrared heating, air compressor and distribution system to include regulators, electrical hoists and power distribution tracks and high bay lighting. Pond provided all utilities site improvements, power, communications, fire protection, and associated support. Roads and covered vehicle storage shall be asphalt or concrete paved, compound security fence with gates were required.
Sustainable “Green Building” concepts and design were considered during the design to make the project USGBC LEED® Gold Certified. Sustainable facility concepts were used to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
