Green
Pond’s Green initiatives and commitment to sustainable and earth-friendly design are evident in our adoption of sustainable design principles firm-wide. Pond considers green building and sustainable design strategies in projects and the day-to-day operations of our offices as a standard practice.
We have proactively incorporated the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) principles into our culture, and have many LEED® Accredited Professionals on staff in all disciplines to ensure that projects meet the high expectations for sustainable, resource-efficient design.
Pond also has a Green Building Committee, consisting of dedicated individuals from all divisions and disciplines to promote ongoing, viable ways to continually improve green, sustainable practices where we live, work and play. We also strive to be stewards in educating our clients and the communities we serve on the benefits and implementation methods of sustainable practices.
Green Capabilities
- Customized Green Project Plan - Sustainable design activities and the desired level of LEED® certification are tailored to the unique needs of each project and client.
- Energy Efficiency Modeling and Analysis - This is essential to optimize energy performance. Comparison with a typical “base-case” building/project allows the project team to study alternative scenarios design elements that affect energy performance.
- Green Materials and Systems Research - Pond identifies and sources products that meet LEED® criteria such as high-recycled content or locally produced materials. Materials are evaluated for availability, cost and durability. A final report at the end of the design development phase will provide descriptions of materials that have been selected following this study. A construction waste management plan will also be drafted with the contractor or construction manager.
- Green Specifications - We will prepare sections on specific materials as well as revisions to standard sections as appropriate and adapt the general conditions (“front end”) sections to reflect the environmental goals of the project.
- Green Owner’s Manual - We will prepare a document for distribution to the building/project occupants/users. This includes the building/project philosophy, design process, members of the design team and further resources. The intent is to extend the institutional memory of the process in the future. They include operations information, including the building/project recycling program, each person’s part in helping to maintain optimum energy efficiency, who to call to report problems and recommended environmentally friendly cleaners.
- Energy Analysis - The LEED® rating systems places heavy emphasis on both energy efficiency and renewable energy. To optimize energy performance, computer modeling is essential. Considering alternative scenarios for the building/project envelope equipment efficiencies, lighting controls and other off-the-shelf technologies can dramatically reduce energy use. Our mechanical engineers also complete a life cycle analysis to evaluate costs/benefits of heating, cooling and ventilation strategies.
